love to hear some other opinions. I don't care that mamu/mexacali/big river was in every other show. when Johnny played big river it was country, the fat mans version wasn't. Bobby was singing about cowboys in mamu, but Jer wasn't playin country - all imo ofcourse.

you want to go rock n roll rythem and blues - but I don't get the that's country music.

And I don't understand how folks don't understand that country is rock is country is blues is folk is AMERICANA.

Labels are for record store clerks - damn, do I put Gil Scott-Heron in blues, rap (or is that hip-hop), or the jazz section?

Thank you BD! I was gonna get involved, but frankly, it was too much work...BMonroe? HWilliams? MRobbins? Elvis? JCash? Country, folk, bluegrass, cowboy, rock, etc., etc., or??? Just like rock, psych rock, blah, blah, blah.

I get blues; I get rock; but much of the rest is too vague/overlapping...I like American folk country rock.

Or, minimally, if we are going to split them up, I want it simple: each genre has to be defined by what instruments are used so an idiot like me can instantly say "ah ha! pedal steel means 'country' and fiddle means 'blue grass' and..." or something along those lines...not gonna happen, eh? Too much overlap? See? That's the problem...crap.

I've sometimes idly wondered if it would be possible to write a computer program that would infallibly identify one piece of music as soul, another as reggae, another as death metal, another as bhangra and so on. You'd have to be able to isolate the elements that incontrovertibly and unambiguously defined each one, and I rather suspect it couldn't be done.

I agree with bluedevil, that labels are for record stores and other small-minded types. Basically I listen to what I like and don't worry too much about finding a pigeonhole to put it in.

Agreed...and yet, I can recall how much significance was attached to the Byrds doing SwhtotRodeo, and Dylan going electric, in the sense of "genres clash! history is made!" and so on...

So, the flip side is, though the three of us agree on the downsides to this anal retentive streak (you'd think I'd be leading the charge, eh?), there is the "we do KNOW it when we hear it, though we can't define it" aspect to it that contributed to the importance of events such as those alluded to above...

Are you a lawyer or a record store clerk?

A frustrated lawyer that wants to open a record store and just alphabetize records by ... producer. However, I was, for a brief period of time, the manager of Kathleen Turner Overdrive, namechecked by Jack Black at the end of High Fidelity. FYI, the Australian band took their name from the film. The real KTO is 3/4 of the current drivin n cryin.
